Energy chokepoints
Asia’s energy dependence on the Middle East, combined with its combustible politics, calls for urgent attention to the fallout from an outbreak of conflict. If the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint between Oman and Iran, is compromised, Asian economies could be knocked onto their knees.
Recently the Suez Canal, another global chokepoint, has been blocked by a grounded container ship and could disrupt worldwide shipments for days. A blockage in the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for c.30% of global seaborne oil trade and has frequently experienced disputes, threats and attacks, would have ramifications far more devastating.
